Burger King: Come è iniziato tutto
First Burger King in the world: history, owner and turnover
Burger King has grown from a small restaurant in Florida to one of the largest fast food chains in the world. Its growth was supported by grilling, franchising and a menu gradually developed around a burger that has become iconic. Today, the company has thousands of restaurants, largely operated by independent franchisees.
Where was the world’s first Burger King born?
The history of the world’s first Burger King requires clarification. The company’s predecessor, called Insta-Burger King, was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1953. The system used a special piece of equipment, the Insta-Broiler, to cook the burgers quickly and evenly.
The Burger King known today was founded in Miami in 1954 by James McLamore and David Edgerton. The two entrepreneurs initially ran a franchise of Insta-Burger King, before developing the business under the abbreviated name Burger King.
Their first Miami restaurant opened on December 4, 1954. Jacksonville therefore represents the origin of the Insta-Burger King project, while Miami is generally considered the city where the modern Burger King brand was born. Even the official website dedicated to franchising indicates 1954 as the year of foundation.

Who founded Burger King?
James McLamore and David Edgerton are recognized as the main founders of Burger King. They improved the operating system of restaurants, perfected cooking equipment, and created a model that was easily reproducible through franchising.
A decisive moment came in 1957 with the introduction of the Whopper. McLamore wanted to offer a larger burger that would offer customers a feeling of greater quality and convenience. The Whopper quickly became the chain’s signature product.
Burger King didn’t immediately build a very extensive menu. Its initial offering was mostly based on burgers, fries, drinks, and smoothies. Over the years, chicken sandwiches, breakfast items, desserts, plant-based alternatives, and market-specific recipes were added.
Who is the owner of Burger King?
The owner of Burger King is Restaurant Brands International Inc., also known as RBI. It is a Canadian company listed on the New York and Toronto Stock Exchanges under the symbol QSR.
Restaurant Brands International was formed in 2014 as a result of the merger between Burger King and Tim Hortons. It currently controls four major restaurant brands:
- Burger King
- Tim Hortons
- Popeyes
- Firehouse Subs
Since Restaurant Brands International is a listed company, Burger King does not belong to a single owner. Ownership is distributed among RBI’s institutional and private shareholders.
Individual restaurants can also have different owners. Approximately 95% of Burger King locations are owned and operated by independent franchisees. These entrepreneurs use the company’s brand and operating system by paying royalties, commissions, and other contributions.
How much does Burger King bill?
To understand how much Burger King invoices, it is necessary to distinguish between the sales made by restaurants and the revenues accounted for directly by the owner company.
According to Restaurant Brands International’s 2025 annual report, Burger King generated approximately $29.37 billion in global system sales. At the end of the same year, the chain had approximately 19,900 restaurants in 126 countries and territories.
System sales include receipts from company premises and franchises. They therefore do not fully represent Restaurant Brands International’s turnover, because a considerable part of sales belongs to independent franchisees.
The owning company earns primarily through royalties, franchise fees, rentals, advertising services, and other activities related to brand management.
